Fancy Goldfish | Info and Facts
Size: 2 to 8
Lifespan: 8 to 12 years
Temperament: Gentle and Playful
Information / Facts: The beautiful and graceful fancy goldfish include many different sub-breeds of fish. These sub-breeds include all different colors and patterns including oranges, reds, blacks and whites. Koi lionhead and bubble eyed goldfish are just a few of the more common variations. Fancy goldfish vary in size and grow larger when given adequate tank space. They are relatively easy to care for and make a great "first fish" for those just starting to care for freshwater fish.
Pros: Fancy goldfish can live up to 12 years with proper care and can be paired with a large variety of other fish including other goldfish, tetras, algae eaters and some catfish. These fish are easy to find at any reputable pet store at an affordable price. Unlike many fish, goldfish have personality and are a lot of fun. Goldfish normally do well on a diet of pellets, though adding in fresh food will help them thrive. Goldfish are overall one of the easiest freshwater fish in regards to the care they require. The required water temperature of 65-75 degrees is easy to maintain, in many situations, without adding a heater.
Cons: Contrary to popular belief, goldfish are not suited to live in a simple bowl. They require more space and need more oxygen in the water than a filter-less bowl can provide. A single adult fancy goldfish should be housed in a 20-gallon tank, with another 10 gallons per additional goldfish. Goldfish are heavy waste producers, and as such require a stronger filter than other fish. Finally, when feeding, you should avoid flake food since fancy goldfish can gulp down too much air when eating it.
